good grief, no, you aren't creeping anybody out, you were one of the first I could actually distinguish from the others - you seem to tend to make sense. Granted though your name jumped at me because i'd been obsessing over Saint Stephen for several weeks. I can't tell most people here apart, though I'm trying. I take the recommendations of people who seem to be regulars, figuring they'll be there to ask questions of if I want to.

why are there so few women here?

Ah, this isn't turning out so bad...I missed the posts above after Robs...the Tell Love Fest! Well, okay, just a few posts...hmmm...maybe Rob's just multiple handling it today? Nonetheless, I can use all I can get, eh? Or, is that sounding to much like that of "stalker esque material"?

Thanks--and as for your question, we don't have any answer for that, BUT it has occurred to us that our profanity and off color humor turns them off...You can stick around and let us know!

Not sure.

You ask why there are so few women here ,DianaW ? I n case you really want the answer : women who love GD music and deadheads parkinglots do not want to listen to neverending insults , anal and other below the belt types of jokes , seething hatred ,smug conceit and various disgusting behaviors bullies strut around this forum way too often . We will not put up with this daily ,month after month , none of the guys wanting to stand up against these ill will misfists . It's a double shame because to not have to put up with the foul mouths here we also cannot relate with those who are the true highlights of this forum , such as DeadheadMonte, LIA,Bbbrew, Grendelchoice,Jglynn,Daliguana, whirlwind,,Staggerleib,Stealz, Deyzof,Tootmo,Billydions, and other NoiseCollector .As for W.Tell ,we thought he was some sort of moderator here ,but frankly he more often incite to the worse trends in vulgar men than moderate illwills,we suppose that's his way to feel superior ,by catering to gutter language ! I spoke with men and women who deserted this forum for the same reasons , and come to archive only for the music now , none being that desperate for company to the point of putting up with the foul mouths on this forum .It is clear to us that whatever we won't accept in any talks with friends, neighbors, family , coworkers, we don't have to accept on any forum , aspacially any Grateful Dead forum !

I guess I've been on enough internet forums to expect a few unpleasant characters, and I don't really care about gutter language. Maybe it's stereotypical but since it seems to be mainly guys I kind of figure it comes with the territory. Or maybe I *am* just that desperate for company LOL - I don't really have anyone at the moment to either listen to or obsess about the Grateful Dead with (my family seems to be fearing for my mental health), so I'm, er, "grateful" for folks here. The guys seem to be mainly insulting each other and in my experience guys do that .... I'm the only female in my household, too, so I'm used to the boys club and its stink.

The sports talk annoys me more than "below the belt" stuff :) At home, I get more tired of that too than of the boys slapping towels at each other's butts kind of stuff.

That's the spirit...skies did get off on the wrong foot here with highly unusual syntax/grammar/etc., and expectations of a sort that I find difficult to discern, and knowing the boys that have been esp foul with skies, I can say with great confidence that they are the cuddliest, nicest, heart of gold sorts you could imagine...thus, it comes down to context and foul humor of an innocent variety, though clearly skies doesn't see it that way.

C'est le vie.

OK, skies, I'll make a bargain with you, if you're at all interested...I promise not to use profanity in any post exchange with you (actually, have I ever done so? I don't think I have ever used any such words except to proclaim joy or excitment and such), deal? We can talk about 68 or 70 or 71, or any other early era show you'd like to...of course, I am limited in that my interests these days are focused on the early era, but if have any questions or comments about any show from 65 to 71, I'd love (really!) to talk about them, exchange ideas and recommendations...if you can overcome/overlook my crimes (which I assume are ones of failing to moderate the behavior of the likes of CLIFF, BD and Rob, and ones I admit guilt to, though as has been pointed out, "moderating" just isn't something they do "here" and as I keep saying, if I thought my commenting on anyone's post here would make the slightest impression I wouldn't have given it up a few yrs back...trust me, it doesn't work, but you probably already know that).

With all its faults, you, or anyone, can make all the diff in the world by just sticking to discussions about the DEAD, just like Healy suggested...so, what do you say? Lets both make the Forum better for one day with a nice exchange about 10-12-68 or 4-6-69 or even 6-17-75 (since I was there)...If anyone disrupts it with foul language, we'll ignore it, following the good advice of Grendel and LiA (do I get any points for the fact that Grendel and I are both "gandi's"? we really do share world views...).

If you'd rather not, the least you could do is refrain from dragging me into it every time someone here upsets you--I don't have any power over any of that...

Dear William Tell :you can be an intelligent man when it suits you and I neverunderstood why upper bracket smarties must roll in the gutters to still feel as men ! Anyway , I was very so glad when Idiscovered deadheads could talk together via computers I forgot about 15 years of time had gone by ,and based my relation to all of you on the wonderful memories and experiences I had in the past .I think I already explained once that deadheads were so nice in the 80's , they were the reason I went to about 200 GD shows .The main topics of conversations were not about which show had which song on which date but simply friendly people being fun and decent together . I never thought it could ever become a fighting ring for show offs bragging about each deatail they know and how others who can't say as much are disregarded , sneered , then insulted .Then it goes on to political conformisms where the same bunch brag about there flags and wars , whereas I used to know intelligent heads with wider views about the world , more understanding about politics and history ,not narrow intolerance such as I found here . I do not believe you want to get along with me , just to manipulate to what suits you ,empty windmills constantly repeating the same old things about such show on such date ,telling you how great you are , and if not catering to that ,snarls and sneers with your bullying buddies . Luckily , I met other deadheads on chat at deadvids and dead.net , nice folks who can talk and listen without insults and gutter language , and so now I know that today they are still loads of decent folks among deadheads which I had thought had vanished based on 4 months on this forum at archive !But i propose a true deal to you :when you'll do your job decently here , I'll noticed and I'll talk with most of you here again ,as I continue to read the archive daily report of forum .As the the bad advice that I should do as if nothing wrong is going with all the foul language ,well don't be supprised that such a cop out have the women quit this here forum ! There is a limit to what real decent deadheads can tell to each others , and not respecting that is in fact not caring at all about how deadheads worth anything can and will not do together ! NA !

OK, but just to be sure--do you mean by "do my job decently" controlling the other folks, or do you just mean giving and taking in discussions of shows? If the former, sorry, it can't be done; if the latter, then we're already there...I NEVER condescend to anyone about a show I like that they ask about, nor do I ever (seriously--you know you have to allow for humor) talk down to anyone for not liking the early era, or liking the later eras (I simply profess my own likes and dislikes, and in fact often ask for them to explain their position as I do mine). Just check out the interaction with Diana W about 6-14-68...

So, if that's what you mean, we're good...

It's not a big deal with me what year ,show , list it was ! What really matters is how nice deadheads are together ,the topics being whatever . That always was what the Grateful Dead were about to many of us and it won't do to resume it all as a technical stuff only .If you don't even know what I am talking about ,Then you are not as smart as I thought !NA !

Alrighty then...fair enough. I would in the spirit of commenting on something you seem to have some interest in, that from a woman's perspective, those I knew in the 70s, when the crowds became larger and larger (ie, venues above 5000), didn't have the same experience in northern CA that you apparently did (which is good to hear). There were even a number that experienced criminal attacks from either a sexual or pers property perspective (Oakland shows for example). Very well could have been "nonDEAD" sorts that just showed up at shows to prey on the meek and mild (typically) DEADHEADs, but it was in part why I stopped going in 82...Perhaps the shows you mentioned were at places like the Greek Theatre, which was a smaller and generally "kinder and gentler" place...

HI , W.Tell ! I want to quite a few Oackland shows and there or anywhere else I met only grate people except once a ripp off (i told that story here once) and a couple lousy characters . Otherwise i never met anyone unkool to me and have never known of any women getting big hassles at GD shows , which is why , to me , deadheads were the light of the world , the men being the most decent bunch i ever saw (and i travelled the world !).I really see a huge difference now and it unsettles me , get me sad also because it affects the values of all good memories i always ha about deadheads . It become unkind and that is not acceptable ,let alone vulgar and hateful , i will not accept this from deadheads even if it would mean I loose them forever then !

Well, of course no one should accept hateful and the like...and I can see how that comes across at times, here and elsewhere. But good to hear you had better experiences than me, post mid 70s or so...I always chalked it up to larger crowds, and larger proportion of folks attending that really weren't the DEAD heads of the earlier days, if even real DEAD heads at all (whatever that means I suppose). Judgemental, I know, but that was how it seemed at the time. I recall a kid, just 13 or so, trying to sell my sister "drugs from the 60s! really!" at a show in the 80s...she replied: "you weren't even alive in the 60s!".

I believe that in real life, if we were all at a show, we'd get along just fine, even the "trolls"

ahhhh...but the drama!

You know old buddy, I think you are right there...maybe we'd have to put CLIFF and Smi2les on opposite sides of the room for a bit, but I really think you are right...that's what's hard to convey to folks that have felt abused--and I can at times appreciate that--since we feel like we know the "real" person behind a profane post. It's not a matter of defending them--I would be upset by some posts myself if I didn't know the poster well via off site communication or just three yrs of history with them...by the same token, it's probably why we take a while to "trust" new folks that rub an old friend the wrong way--we just don't know them well enough to judge them as friend or foe (and enough trolls upset us for us to imagine the foes are "real" rather than just stirring things up for a "good time" from their perspective).

For sure , we would have been good buddies if we had met at shows , deadheads being the only americans who were always free to speak with , convince me to go with them hundred of miles away at the drop of a hat ,hang out all nights in their parkinlots even tho i had never met them the day before ! By the way the only time i didn't like their scene was a strange day in Oakland where for once the crowd was mainly only men . The vibes were heavy , unpleasant and not being the kind of queen at ease with mostly only boys around , well , that was the only concert i left half an hour after music started when i realized 3 out of 4only were men and even GD played yukky .For me good news vibrations must include equal numbers of boys and gals to feel comfortable in the crowd .That said i am curious to kow how things goes on safety matters nowadays . Are the women cruising around in the parkinlots late at night no problems ?Methinks , in the 80's deadheads got keenly conscious of the importance to keep their scene safe for all and would not hesitate to run off the worse scumbags dangerous to all . And I am sure to this very day that is how it was during all these years i went to shows and so why i cherired deadheads so much . As for the troll bit , i don't really know the meaning of that word in relation to thi forum ad never quite understood why anyone could thing i was one !I am only a deadhead from overseas who got overjoyed discovering i could talk with deadheads on computers ! Frankly tho if thi archive forum reserved mostly to technical infos on GD , i had not known that , wanting only to goof around with what i thought were friends , . Never had as many hassles with heads as on this forum !

my last visit was last year after a funeral for a friend. Slept a few nights there, did a few Henchmen pizza runs, left a Persuasions do GD cd with a She Devil, and Drink with Uncle John every time I stop in..... Find me there or Banta, but currently I am careless, homeless, careless, otherwise an 801 Violator....so I am not really drinking at this time. Hope to run across some folks I met from Hag Records if I hook this gig with the wild horses.

Good Luck, Rasta

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to dismiss what you said, I understand your feelings. I was just saying that I don't have the same reaction to bad language etc., esp. when it just seems to be guys hassling each other. I haven't seen anything that seemed misogynistic, just some chest thumping. Well, there are a few threads that seem nasty but I just stop reading, and I try not to draw any conclusions from it 'cus I figure these things have histories, and people who are perfectly nice in real life feel less inhibition about ripping into someone online. I'm very capable of it myself.

Dear Diana ; your point of view is perfectly valid too, I wiwh you fine pastimes here !What you say about people getting rude online while they mightnot be so n real life may be true too , but I am not much of an expect about internet behaviors while I have known deadheads as trustworthy people since early 80's and they knew how to keep their scenes decent enough themselves so women would always feel safe among their crowds ,and their political opinions were never cliches same as TV either ! Maybe deadheads are not the light of the world as they used to be anymore ?
